AT&T, O2 Update iPhone 3G Availability Status
Submitted by Edward Kirk on July 24, 2008 - 4:04pm.

Supplies of iPhone 3G's at Apple stores and carrier stores alike have been low, but some have been wondering if the carriers have secretly been holding out on customers. Both O2 and AT&T have commented on their supplies, and both of them have said, not surprisingly, "no". They're exactly as short on iPhone 3G's as you think they are.
Both companies are promising that they will get handsets out to customers has soon as they possibly can, but they're both waiting for Apple to get them more. Supplies are so tight for both carriers now that AT&T has announced that all of their remaining handsets will be going directly to their direct fulfillment program for customers willing to pre-order the device and then wait several weeks in advance.

I feel sorry for the guys who have to wait...
For some reason AT&Ts comments dont surprise me... typical AT&T. Almost as bad as the "WiFi prank"
